David Butterfield Funeral Directors of Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire
Founded in 1987 by David Butterfield, former Cooperative Funeral Manager.
Joined in 1998 by Shawn Peel and shortly after by his wife Claire, David’s daughter, who now run the business following David’s retirement.
They are very proud to be a small family run independent practice who take a great deal of pride in their care to the local community, although a business they feel care and vocation to be paramount.
Shawn has always participated in many fundraising activities which over the years have included The Three Peaks of Britain Challenge for Cystic Fibrosis Trust and taking a Jetski around the Isle of Wight for Help for Heroes.
More recently as an ex-serviceman and a Member of the Royal British Legion he developed the idea of a charity donation for Funeral Plans sold through Golden Charter with a payment made to the Royal British Legion which has now raised approximately £200k.
The business has now also received a hat-trick of awards from Golden Charter, including Funeral Planner of the year twice and a special recognition award for his work with the Royal British Legion.
Their business profile was raised significantly in 2016 when they were asked to care for the local MP for Batley and Spenborough, the late Jo Cox, following her untimely and tragic death.
However, being nominated and becoming a finalist for a Butterfly Award is particularly special as it was a nomination from a grieving family who following the loss of their little boy still took the time to submit the nomination which made them feel very emotional and humble.
They feel very privileged to help families through such difficult and traumatic times and often stay in touch. One such example was that recently following the loss of her little girl a young mum has fundraised and felt so strongly about the care she received has donated a cuddle cot to them, so that other families can benefit from the same level of care.
What Others Have Said
“From start to finish Shawn and his team guided us carefully and gently through the whole process of organic and planning our sons funeral service.
Beau went for post mortem and we had no real idea where he was or when he’d be back. It was all such a blur. Shawn took all our anxiety away, he knew who to get in touch with and as soon as Beau arrived back into the hospital he sent a car with two people – one to drive and one to hold our baby and cuddle him all the way back to his Chapel of Rest.
Shawn and his wife Claire were amazing. Claire looked after Beau for me, she cuddled him, wrapped him up warm, talked to him and made sure she treated him as I would have. Every night before they left they made sure he was ok. I can’t express or put into words how comforting this was for us.
When I went to visit at the chapel of rest, Claire dressed him for me, she was often giving him a cuddle. She made sure I had as much time as I wanted and gave me hugs and held my hand all the time.
They arranged the vicar to come for a blessing. Nothing was too much trouble.
Shawn took over the funeral planning. He made suggestions but made it clear the final decisions were ours and he supported us every step of the way. We ended up with a beautiful service including singing and white doves.
Shawn gently suggested that Beau came and spent the night at home the day before the funeral, again he arranged the cuddle cot and brought him to me. At first I wasn’t sure but we discussed it and it was 100% the best thing I did. It gave me precious extra time and it’s the one thing I’ll be forever thankful for.
Shawn helped me out Beau in the coffin and wrap him up warm but when it got too much he gave me a much needed hug and took over.
Butterfield’s went over and above. They were amazing and made a traumatic time bearable. I’ll be grateful to them forever.”
