St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
I have been a midwife for over 25 years and in 2004 became Whiston Hospital’s first ever Bereavement Midwife, since then I have made it my mission to help the Trust deliver the best possible care to the families who need it most.
I spend precious time with parents and their little one making keepsakes such as foot and hand prints, taking photographs and supporting them to create lasting memories of holding and dressing their baby. My number one aim is to provide families with as many positive memories as possible to help with their bereavement.
Beyond the delivery suite I stay in touch with families for many reasons, I’m someone they can contact anytime of night or day, they can talk openly and honestly about how they are feeling and of course they can ask as many questions as they need to, I like to think I’m always there to help families feel safe and supported.
Often I support mothers through subsequent pregnancies offering reassurance during the antenatal period and sometimes if I’m lucky I can be there when they meet their new baby.
My experience has meant that in recent years I have been asked to support staff who are caring for bereaved families and I run regular teaching sessions for midwives and healthcare assistants to improve their knowledge and enhance the care they deliver.
Many people ask me how I do the job that I do and the honest answer is that I don’t really know, what I do know is that I am privileged to meet amazing mums, dads and families who openly welcome me into their lives during the most difficult of times and never a day goes by when I don’t do all I can to provide the best care possible to the parents and babies I meet.

I met Julie in February 2011 when unfortunately my son Harry was stillborn at 32 weeks. The care, comfort & compassion I received from Julie was outstanding, she not only supported me through the darkest time of my life but also my family too. Julie also helped me create memories of my son, something I will be forever grateful for. Nobody deserves this award more than Julie, an an amazing lady with a very big heart.

I met Julie when I gave birth to my daughter born 10lb in February of this year. After having my baby Julie was the person who came in and stitched me up and looked after me during my time at whiston with my little girl. She was lovely and I can’t thank her enough for looking after me.
I do not know Julie personally but work with her daughter Nicola who always sings her praises for the work her mum does and how many people she helps and supports. She sounds so deserving of this award and I wish her all the very best.

Voted and shared. Julie looked after me when my baby girl Isabella Rose was stillborn. She was with me when I found out she had died and held my hand through it all. She answered questions and comforted me. The day after giving birth I had to leave Isabella in the hospital, Julie stood with her and promised me she would look after her until the next stage.
Julie was always at the end of the phone when I needed her in the months after and when I found out I was pregnant again 3 months later she supported me and made sure I got all the treatment I needed.
Julie is just an amazing lady, she’s much more than a midwife, I will never be able to thank her enough for everything she did for me at the lowest part of my life and for the support in ensuring my little boy arrived safely.
Even though we met through terrible circumstances, I am so glad Julie is in my life. She more than deserves this award x

I first met Julie on the 13th April 2006 to be told my baby was going to be a still born I could not thank Julie enough for the support she gave to me throughout my delivery and stayed with me all the way through and the aftercare also the support she gave me for bringing my son home so I could spend a few days with him Julie made me a keepsake blanket and did hand and footprints with a picture which was kind and generous, hope Julie wins the award xxx

Julie was extremely kind and supportive to me and my partner this year when we lost our little boy Teddy. Dont know what i would have done without her and the girls at Whiston. She called me several times afterwards to make sure i was doing ok and also made sure i was looked after when i had to go back in. Thank you Julie xxxx
