My Plea:
Susan Brierley is by far the most amazing woman I have ever met. I think I speak for everyone who has suffered a baby loss at Oldham Hospital when I say that this incredible woman makes a difference to everyone she meets.
Not only does she strive to see as many bereaved parents as possible along her path of being a bereavement midwife she has also worked tirelessly to improvement the care at Oldham in which grieving parents receive. In the 4 years that I have known Sue she has made such an incredible difference to the care received at Oldham for parents like myself. Creating the butterfly suite where parents can spend their last few moments with their baby, currently working hard at opening a rainbow clinic for next pregnancy after loss. This woman is selfless and has the warmest heart ever. This lady constantly thinks of others around her, this isn’t just a job to her, she cares for everyone she meets and feels the same pain we do.
She makes every effort and more to make our journey after a loss that little bit easier.
It’s because of Sue that I managed to take that first step into attending a SANDS meeting and it is because of her that I am now a befriender and now help other families who have suffered a loss through the SANDS charity.
Between meeting parents at the hospital, at home, setting up new clinics, opening new suites, researching a better way of caring for babies that have passed away (Sue has previously looked into a kinder way of babies being taking to the mortuary to ease some pain from the parents), attending almost every SANDs meeting, helping people take that first brave step into a SANDs meeting and even coming to memorial services, this one in a million incredible, caring and loving woman deserves a medal.
I have never met anyone who goes so much above and beyond her job, and who truly makes a difference to people’s lives. We are not just patients to her but people and friends.
It is many peoples wish that this lady gets the recognition she truly 100% deserves.
Thank you Sue for everything you do, you have touched the lives of so many people.

I return to the ward every year in her birthday and am greeted with hugs and support regardless of the fact we are 3 years down the line. Sue understands that time doesn’t heal the wounds left by loss and has been my crutch throughout the process. An unsung hero of the hospital and I cannot thank her enough for the work she continues to do for me and other grieving parents.”
Absolutely wonderful lady. I haven’t leaned on Sue as much but i know she is only a phone call away. She was quick to respond to any messages i sent her and even messaged me on her days off. She has supported friends through not only loss but through next pregnancies by attending scans etc. After a brief first visit with her she took her time to remember mine, my partners and childrens names. Whenever i see her in the hospital she still stops to speak with us and ask about us all. Its the small things that make the difference. Sue goes above and beyond her role.
She was fab with my niece who lost her son .
Sue is an inspiration for her kindness and teaches new midwives how to care for new parents who have gone through this tragic loss

Susan Brierley has given us amazing support over the past year since we lost our son. She will answer messages at all times and has been extremely helpful with support in my next pregnancy. I have read other people’s accounts of baby loss where the bereavement midwife hasn’t understood them or other midwives haven’t been so sympathetic with their situation, I feel so extremely lucky that I met someone like Sue to help me through this and she completely understood everything about how I felt. I lost twins 4 years ago. I first met Sue at sands. She has been really supportive of my mental health and generally over the past 4 years. She is someone you can talk to when life seems so bleak. I would like to nominate Sue for midwife of the year

Sue has been our family rock. My daughter lost her first baby 10 years ago. Sue has been so supportive she signposted us to support networks gets involved with SANDS charity with us.
