Providing help and healing after the death of a baby in Plymouth

My Plea:

I have volunteered at the Acorn Centre for nearly two years now, going from a student volunteer to a qualified person-centred counsellor. I chose to volunteer at the Acorn Centre as it is a charity close to my heart providing specialist pregnancy counselling for men and women throughout Warwickshire. Supporting those who are facing difficult pregnancy and birth related issues, such as fertility, miscarriage, still birth and post-natal depression; amongst other issues.

I feel honoured and privileged to be able to carry out the work that I do supporting individuals through their hardest and most heartbreaking lows and losses. When I found out that I had been nominated by Sarah for this award, I was truly speechless (which believe me, doesn’t happen often!)

I thought how can I truly do this plea justice? How can I say what I want to and get the message across about how passionate and important baby loss and bereavement work are for me. With this in mind I’ve decided to keep it simple.

The key messages behind this plea for me are:
 *To continue to raise the profile of baby loss by supporting and educating people in whatever individual way they need to be supported with empathy, compassion, patience and non-judgement. We have a duty to be; “stronger together”; and to continue the difficult conversations to ensure every loss has been recognised and honoured.
 *To thank Sarah for trusting me enough to share in her story and to allow me to hold her hurt and grief for her until she was able to hold it for herself. My college tutors and supervisor always said “you get the clients you need” and I truly believe this about Sarah. I have heartfelt admiration for her and she has taught me what great strength, humility, determination and pure love there can be in loss and grief.

Most importantly, this plea is to remember a sweet baby boy, Finlay Watts. A beautiful butterfly.

What Other’s Have Said

“Kerry has shown such great empathy and compassion towards me over the past few difficult months. Most importantly though, despite our open and honest discussions about my thoughts, feelings and experiences, never once have I felt judged for the actions I have taken over the past five years since Finlay died. She makes me feel like she really wants to help me work through my difficulties and that she will walk with me until I feel able to continue this hard journey of grief without her by my side.”
