My Plea:
I can’t think of a more deserving winner of the inspirational mother award than my Nana Mal. The heartache she has suffered in her life you could forgive her for giving up on life but what she does is the complete opposite. She puts everyone before herself and is the most selfless loving person you could wish meet.
When I was reading the criteria needed to win the award I felt this was actually written for my nana. I can tick every box and more. I am over the moon I have this chance to tell her tragic story as well as sharing what an amazing, strong, unbelievably brave, caring, generous, kind, loving and very very special person she is. Simply she is the inspirational mother!!! And here is why:
How can there be such a person in the world that has suffered in the worst possible ways, how she still stands on her little size 3 feet and gets through each and every day with such inspiration and positivity I will never know. She has been through more than one tragedy in her life.
Firstly being the death of her son Paul a neo-natal baby born at 24 weeks and passing at 10 hours and 15 minutes old.
As she tried to battle through life raising her 2 small children (both neo-natal survivors) at home she was hit again with the unbearable loss of her eldest child Andrea. Nana Mal had taken Andrea to school one morning but never got the chance to pick her up again. She lost her little girl in the most horrific incident that happened in school that day. She became a mummy to 2 angels; Andrea was her first neo-natal baby and was born in 1968 and tragically passed away in 1972 aged 3 years and 10 months. She should of celebrated her 50th birthday on the 22nd of this month.
She gave birth to 3 neo-natal babies but only getting to raise 1, but what a hell of a job she managed to do.
Her son Peters words:
‘My mother has been inspirational throughout my life, although a lot of my childhood was spent at Agecroft Cemetery. I remember this to be a place to play, a place with happy memories of me and my mum.
I may have been the one baby that survived neo-natal but I would give my place of survival up any time to get me grandson Charley back into my daughters arms again’
Me and my Nana Mal have always had a special relationship, I love time spent with her when I was little, she was happy, fun, loving and is my best friend. I would have never known growing up how much she had suffered and lost before I born. She was just so positive every day and always taught me right from wrong in life as well as teaching me what was most important in life which is:
• Family
• Spending quality time with loved ones
• Always love each other unconditionally
• And to laugh until your belly aches.
My Nana has inspired me in even more ways in this past year, in ways that were never expected by either of us. She had to relive her experiences of child loss, to help in my hours, days, week, months of need after losing my 3rd son and Nana Mals great grandson at just 2 days old due to neo-natal sepsis. Charley was born on the 18th April 2017 at 29 weeks weighing 2lbs 14oz; he gained his angel wings on the 20th April 2017 and is now buried very close to his Great Aunty Andrea.
I can honestly say the help and support I have got from my Nana was the only way I’ve got through the unbearable days I’ve had, she saved me so many days from my unbearable pain and also made me feel safe in what I was feeling was natural. She guided me through my darkest days and helped me keep a smile on my other 2 boys face in a way only she can.
My Nana has been poorly recently to the point of being admitted to Salford Royals intensive care, the nurses there were even inspired by her kindness, she bought each nurse and doctor that helped save her life that night a box chocolates – I mean surely only one in a million people would do that the morning after she nearly died!! I can go on and on and on about her acts of kindness but I’ll leave it with that she’s a hero, she is a role model, she lives to help others, and she succeeds in anything that’s in her control, She is a very special, beautiful inspirational mother.
Thank you for taking the time to read this

“How can there be such a person in this world that has suffered in the worse possible ways? She has been through the death of her 4 year old little girl. She battled through life, only to face another hit with the unbearable loss of her son Paul, who was born premature and gained his angel wings at 10 hours old. Marilyn has inspired me in many ways this past 12 months, I can’t imagine the sort of person I would be today, if she didn’t help me deal with the loss of my baby boy last year. My Charley was born premature and gave me 2 full days with him. I can honestly say the help and support I got from My Nana Marilyn was the only thing that helped me.”
