My Plea:

As specialist bereavement midwives we are privileged to look after families who have sadly experienced baby loss. We provide support from the moment a diagnosis is made, continuing our care through the antenatal period, throughout labour, postnatally as well as at home after discharge. We care for parents in our dedicated bereavement suite which includes a “home from home” room, a clinical room, bathroom and a nursery to ensure families can spend as much time with their baby and precious memories can be made. Families can also spend time with their baby in the hospitals time garden, a beautiful and private outdoor space. As a team we provide photographs, hand and foot prints and castings as well as Sands memory boxes which include the “hand in their heart” keyrings. We also provide books for parents to help communicate with siblings and special dolls from the Lexi Doll Charity. We are also able to provide support in subsequent pregnancies by attending scans and appointments.

We have been a pilot site for the National Bereavement Care Pathway and have been working closely with our A&E department, Neonatal unit, Children’s ward, Gynaecology ward and Early Pregnancy Unit. We are committed to ensuring the hospital provides a gold standard of care and fully support the National Bereavement Care pathway to ensure this level of care is achieved nationwide.

We work closely with our local Sands group and hospital chaplaincy team to organise memorial services and remembrance events, including events during baby loss awareness week (BLAW). We also organise and provide training to student midwives, midwives, new doctors and maternity care assistants enabling them to feel better prepared in caring for our families, helping to create memories and completing all necessary paperwork.

Bereavement care is our passion and we are totally committed to providing high quality, seamless care in these devastating times. We know we can never take away the pain but we hope that in providing the right care, parents can feel safe to create precious memories and begin to grieve.
